When I started 20 years ago, I was one of just a few chimney professionals in South County. Prior, I served in the Air-force, and later studied engineering from 1977 to 1985. In 1987, I chose to leave engineering to use my creative talents with chimney restoration. Unlike engineering, I'd meet hundreds of great local folks, and in the course of hard physical work, keep the fitness level I had achieved as a college athlete.
This profession is one of great responsibility. It is also one that many have exploited to make a fast buck by overcharging or doing unneeded work. Always get a second opinion when told you need extensive work. One scam is to discount chimney cleanings in order to target more homes for unneeded or barely needed follow up work at grossly high prices. Always ask for details and photos when follow up work is proposed, especially when you cannot go up on the roof to verify.
